The Separatist in Church History

The the study and charts of Church History, the Separatist are left out. They practiced the doctrine of separation through out Church History:

Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said:
“I will live with them
and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they will be my people.” Lev. 26:12; Jer. 32:38; Ezek. 37:27
Therefore,
“Come out from them
and be separate,
says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
and I will receive you.” Isaiah 52:11; Ezek. 20:34,41
And,
“I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters,
says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Samuel 7:14; 7:8
Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1

What is biblical separation?
What is secondary separation?

T
he reason why is like what Jesus said of the Church of Ephesus and Philadelphia:

I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.
Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. Revelation 2:2-6
I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. Revelation 3:8 & 9

Separatist Movements in the Church grew out of doctrinal drifts in the visible Churches:
  • Nicolatianism: The lording of Clergy over the congregation.
  • Sacramentalism: The Church had two ordinaces, baptism and the Lord's Supper. Over time these ordinaces replaced the gospel to be received by faith as sacraments that were necessary for salvation and to receive God's grace.
  • Baptismal Regeneration: The Christian rite of immersion after faith in Jesus was perverted to Pedobaptism and then to Baptismal regeneration.
  • Transubstantiation/Consubstantiation: The Lord's Supper was perverted from a memorial meal of Jesus' death and shed blood for the New Covenant into Jesus' presence, spiritual or literal to be sacrificed by the minister/priest on the altar and to be eaten by the congregation.
  • Lapsed Christians: The writer of Hebrews mention Jews who lapsed from their faith and returned to Judaism to avoid persecution from Jews. The writer called this apostasy and bring the faith into disrepute.
During the persecutions of the Romans, many Gentiles lapsed from their faith to avoid persecution from Rome. They compromised and offered incense to Caesar. Later when the Edict of Milan ended the oppression and persecution of Christians, the lapsed Christians sought to return as full member's of the Church. The separatist would not allow them to return as member's and leaders saying their compromise showed they were apostates. The Nicolaitan Churches allowed that lapsed Christians into their congregations and leadership. These leaders accepted the marriage of Church and State that would for Roman Catholicism.
The Separatist fought to maintain doctrinal purity and kept the Church separate from the State. However, even Separatist Church would drift in their doctrines or practices and would result in member's separating from their Churches. The last separation was the Fundimentalist Movement of 1910. This Movement would be compromised by the Neo-Evangelical Movement (repudiation of the doctrine of separation), King James Onlyism (legalism, secondary separation) and Lordship Salvation (Reformed, Gomarist, TULIP Calvinism) that front loads the gospel with total inability regeneration before faith, perverting metanoia by adding confession of sin, sorrow for sin, etc. as a step in salvation, perseverance of the saints to reach "final salvation (only the elect will persevere) and adding discipleship with justification to be saved.

  1. Looking at this impressive study I realize I am stuck at the bottom with the Apostles teachings.
I have never studied any of the groups mentioned. Heard of many of them of course but never studied their stated beliefs.
It is a bit like my wife's teaching scripture to our children... nothing the world would throw at them could then dislodge God's truths.

    1. The apostles doctrines is the foundation. However those doctrines shaped the course of Church history. The stream of history tells us when and where Churches departed from apostolic doctrine and the consequences that has on the body and bride of Christ.
I do not have the same interest in some subjects as other Christians have. However I learn from them through their studies. This is how we strengthen one another in the faith.
