Answering an Objection to Wednesday Crucifixion

Here is an objection to Wednesday and how I answer it.

According to the Wednesday theory, Saturday is the third day in the grave.  But this can’t be.  Look at renderings of this passage by Young and Mounce.

Luke 24:21 ….this third day is passing to-day, since these things happened. (Young’s)

Luke 24:21 ….Indeed besides all this, but it is now the third day since these things happened. (Mounce)

The clear testimony of Scripture is that Sunday was the third day, and was still in progress when Cleopas mentioned it.  This confirms Saturday was the second day, and Friday was the crucifixion day.

What the author forgets is that only Matthew was written to the Jews and is filled with OT references and allusions. The "three days and three nights" foundation and conclusion is based on Matthew's account.

Mark (from Peter) Luke is John audience is Gentiles. They had use to language of accommodation for them because they were unfamiliar with  Judaism.

Thus they all refer to Roman time...dawn on Sunday. Gentiles did not need to know or understand the sign of Jonah. That was for Jewish understanding only.

Mark 16:1 & 2 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. Very early on the first day of the week (Sunday), just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb.

Luke 24:1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.

Luke 24:1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.

John 20:1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.

What is interesting is that the Jewish Church for awhile met Saturday night after the Sabbath ended at sunset, they met to remember Jesus' resurrection.

On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight. Acts 20:7

On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. 1 Corinthians 16:2

This faded away as the Gentiles who met on Sunday took hold.
